DESCRIPTION:

Leptasthenura aegithaloides
Length: 165mm. Sexes alike. Bill black; iris dark brown; upperparts of head dark brown with longitudinal markings in buffy cinnamon; eyebrow white; upperparts pale greyish brown. Throat and foreneck whitish with dark brown spots, centre of breast, belly and undertail coverts buffy; sides of breast and flanks pale greyish brown. Wing coverts greyish brown, remiges brown with pale greyish brown edge and cinnamon bar to base of outer vexilla of primaries; tail blackish brown with central feathers edged buffy grey as well as on tip of remaining feathers, feathers ending in a sharp point. Legs black. Habitat and behaviour: it frequents wooded areas, xerophytic monte and thickets in general, in pairs or in loose groups. It is always moving about, it climbs and perches nimbly. The voice consists of a harsh shriek. It feeds on spiders, insects and other small invertebrates. The nest is built in tree trunks and banks where up to four white eggs are laid. Range: from Neuquén and Río Negro to southern Santa Cruz, where the race Leptasthenura aegithaloides pallida occurs.
