DESCRIPTION:

Length: 195mm. Sexes alike. Bill black; iris dark brown; forehead and supercilium white; crown greyish brown; nape yellowish ochraceous; hind neck and above greyish brown; rump and uppertail coverts blackish brown; rectrices blackish with whitish edge. Throat, foreneck and underparts mostly light brownish grey, undertail coverts whitish. Wing coverts as back; remiges dark greyish brown with tertiaries margined light greyish brown; axillaries and underwing coverts very light grey with whitish margins. Legs black. Juveniles are similar to adults but lack the yellow nape. Habitat and behaviour: an inhabitant of steppes and pebbly plains with creeping vegetation on hilltops, it can be observed almost invariably perched on rocks. It is found in scattered groups and is somewhat wary.
This species nests in crevices or cavities under the rocks, laying up to three white eggs with reddish specks. Range: distributed from Neuquén to Tierra del Fuego. There are two races: Muscisaxicola flavinucha flavinucha is found from Neuquén to south of Santa Cruz, and Muscisaxicola flavinucha brevirostris occurs in Tierra del Fuego.
