Female is slightly smaller than male and juveniles are similar to adults but mostly paler; black in breast is barely marked. Habitat and behaviour: it inhabits thick reed beds and rushes; found in pairs or groups that, if alerted, curiously approach the scene to see what is happening. It is amazingly tame and restless; feeds on insects and arthropods found within vegetation and on the water surface. Flies low, close to the water surface or among the reeds. Vocalisation is a whistle ending in a harsh note. The Many-coloured Rush-Tyrant nests among aquatic vegetation, a deep goblet-shaped construction, made with plant fibres adhered to the rushes; clutch size: up to three creamy white eggs.
Range: it is fairly common in its habitat; outside its range it can only be found sporadically during migration. Distribution ranges from Neuquén and Río Negro to south Santa Cruz, where the race Tachuris rubigastra rubigastra is found.
